4A—Reflecting on Teaching
At the “Proficient” level, the teacher can accurately assess the effectiveness of a lesson and provide specific examples to support his or her claim. The reflection also includes specific ideas on how the lesson could be improved next time.
4B—Maintaining Accurate Records
The music teacher must have an effective system for monitoring student progress (either of formal or informal assessment), as well as a system for maintaining accurate records of music course-specific items (ie paperwork for trips, inventory, music library). Students need to have access to the information so that they can track their individual progress.
4C—Communicating with Families
The “Proficient” teacher regularly sends home information about what is happening in the music program in addition to student progress reports. One of the easiest ways that this can be done is through a monthly email update to parents. Care should be taken to make hard copies to send home with kids whose parents do not have email.
At the bottom of the page I have a downloadable file of a parent contact log that I have been using since 2011. It was given to me by Olivia Smith, assistant principal at Herget Middle School in Aurora, IL.
4D—Participating in a Professional Community
Teachers should be involved in supervision duties in the school. They should also work collaboratively with colleagues to develop curriculum, assessments and build upon their programs.
4E—Growing and Developing Professionally
In order to be regarded as “Proficient” teachers must regularly participate in professional development conferences, as well as engage with others in the school regarding best practices for students. Teachers should seek out opportunities that will lead to leadership opportunities in the future.
4F—Showing Professionalism
The teacher displays a high level of ethics and professionalism in dealings with both students and colleagues and complies fully and voluntarily with school and district regulations.
