SmartMusic
Overview
SmartMusic is a computer software program that allows students to read music off of a screen and get instant feedback on how well they played or sang. The screen shows which notes were performed correctly with a green note head, and which notes were performed incorrectly with a red note head. This shows the student exactly what needs more work for the next try. This is the most basic use for SmartMusic. Other helpful ways to use and incorporate SmartMusic are outlined on this page.
SmartMusic does require a subscription to use. Teachers can get a subscription and have it at the school for students to use. Students can also get subscriptions so they can access SmartMusic from their homes. While SmartMusic is an amazing resource, these costs can add up. The cost per year for the music teacher is $140 and each student pays $36. There are also costs for microphones, headphones, etc. If this seems like too much, check out the page on Garage Band and Audacity for a more economical way to use technology for assessment.

INSTRUMENTAL
Key features include the ability to: - Play along with accompaniment SmartMusic provides full accompaniments to band, orchestra and solo works for students to play along with. Students can turn their part on and off so they can hear how it fits with the accompaniment. - Adjust tempo SmartMusic gives the user the ability to speed up and slow down the tempo on the excerpt he or she is working on. This is a very useful feature when learning music. Slowing the tempo down gives the user the opportunity to be more accurate which helps them learn correctly. - Record Students can easily record themselves with the SmartMusic software. This gives the students the opportunity to self-assess. - Assess instantly SmartMusic shows students how they play AS they play. If a note is played correctly the note head turns green. If a note is played incorrectly the note head turns red. - Sight read SmartMusic has numerous sight reading examples that can be graded in the same way prepared excerpts are. |

CHORAL
SmartMusic recently added a choral aspect to the software. This is a great resource for all choral and general music teachers. The sight singing capability is very helpful in teaching interval recognition, and with developing and refining the ear. This software can be implemented in the classroom starting in elementary school general music classes. The assessment tool is especially appealing for this age group. Seeing notes turn green and red as they sing is an exciting "game" that is challenging and fun. The video to the right gives a more in-depth look at the choral aspect of SmartMusic. |
