Assessment Ideas
- Students record themselves and critically listen back. They can write a guided response to what they hear and what they can improve. They can also give specific grades in different categories of performance such as tone quality, musicianship, etc. It is a good idea to give students at least two chances at this so they can try to improve their performance based on what they hear. The more critical of a listener a student becomes, the better musician and performer they become.
- Director records ensemble and plays back for students. Students then respond similarly to the ideas above on individual assessment. Guided writing is a great way to go with this. It is amazing how much the next playing of the piece will improve when students have specific ideas of what to improve.
- Director feedback from recordings is an extremely efficient assessment technique. Give sections specific feedback based on the recording.
- Director feedback/assessment for individual recordings. Director gives written feedback and/or a grade based on a submitted recorded assignment. It is also a good idea to give multiple chances on this so the student has the chance to improve. The assessment is the means to an end. It is not the end goal itself. The assessment helps students learn and grow so they can give a better PERFORMANCE.
Rubrics
- This rubric is for student self assessment on operating Garage Band
- This website offers an extensive selection of music rubrics
- It is also an excellent idea to take ideas from these rubrics and add things/personalize them. Every school and situation is different. It is important that the resources you use are tailored to fit your needs.
